Ingredients

  • 2 pcs short grain cooked rice — hot (preferably freshly made)
  • 4 pcs egg — (2 per person)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil — (for frying the eggs)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seed
  • 1 pcs scallion stalk — finely chopped
  • 1 pinch nori flake — crumbled - optional
  • 1 pinch gochugaru — optional

Instructions

Preparation

  1. 1

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil – it should be noticeably hot, almost smoking. This is key for crispy egg edges.

  2. 2

Crack the eggs into the skillet. Fry for 2-3 minutes, basting the eggs with the hot oil using a spoon (Korean technique) until the whites are set with crispy, brown edges and the yolk is still runny.

  3. 3

Place a portion of hot rice into each bowl.

  4. 4

Add 0.5 tablespoon of butter to the rice – let it melt into the warm rice.

  5. 5

Drizzle the rice with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 0.5 teaspoon of sesame oil per serving.

  6. 6

Place the eggs on top of the rice. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, chopped scallions, nori and gochugaru.

  7. 7

Serve immediately. Before eating, pierce the yolk and mix everything together - the yolk will create a velvety sauce.

Notes

Tip: For the best results, use freshly cooked, warm rice. If you have rice from the refrigerator, heat it in a pan with a little water until the water evaporates and the grains become soft and fluffy again.

Variations:
TikTok trends promote "Butter gyeran-bap" with an extra knob of butter. If you prefer spicy flavors, try replacing the soy sauce with gochujang paste. A side of kimchi is also an excellent addition to the dish.

This dish is best straight from the pan — it is not suitable for prolonged storage. In just 10 minutes, you can prepare a complete and satisfying breakfast, perfect for a quick start to the day.
